Harry Revel, Les Baxter, Samuel Hoffman "Music Out Of The Moon" (Green Vinyl LP)

Release Date: Nov 7, 2025

Before exotica had a name. Before electronic music felt futuristic. Before space travel became a fantasy we could soundtrack.

Music Out of the Moon is one of the true origin points—an early, otherworldly ritual where electronics, orchestration, and emotion quietly collided. Released in 1947, it was the first commercial recording to feature the theremin, an instrument played without touch, floating between pitches like a voice from another world.

Here, the theremin isn’t used for shock or sci-fi menace. Instead, it sighs, hums, and seduces—sweet, human, almost intimate. Composer Harry Revel supplied the conceptual spark and themes; Les Baxter, still years away from defining exotica outright, shaped them into lush nocturnal arrangements filled with woodwinds, strings, and hushed brass. At the center is Dr. Samuel J. Hoffman, whose masterful theremin work would later haunt films like Spellbound and The Lost Weekend.

This expanded collection includes all tracks from both Music Out of the Moon and Music for Peace of Mind—a complete document of a moment when music reached outward and inward at the same time. It’s not space music in the modern sense. It’s inner space: late-night listening, candlelight, velvet curtains, and the feeling that paradise might exist somewhere just beyond the dial.

A proto-exotica landmark.
A hi-fi dream.
A ritual of sound before the ritual had a name.
